I am an astronomer studying the resolved stellar populations of the Milky Way and its closest neighboring galaxies. One of the great unresolved questions in astrophysics is how galaxies evolve over the lifetime of the Universe. By measuring the ages, chemical compositions, and orbital motions of the stars composing nearby galaxies, empirical histories of the galaxies can be reconstructed; this will lead to a better understanding of the physical and environmental processes that govern galaxy evolution. My primary research focus has been on optical and near-infrared measurements of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the numerous dwarf irregular galaxies of the Local Group. These measurements have been based on images and spectra obtained from telescopes in Chile, Arizona, Hawaii, the Canary Islands, and in space.
