Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN)

UTas People Involved
Dr Giuseppe Cimo's research is dedicated to extra-galactic radio astronomy. His current interest is the physics of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and in particular the variability of the radiation emitted from the regions close to the central engine. In detail he works on interstellar scintillation, polarimetry, shock-in-jet theory and very compact structures.

At UTAS Giuseppe's project is mainly devoted to the Intraday Variability (IDV) phenomenon. The main aim is to study of the central regions of quasars and BL~Lacs using the attainable high resolution of VLBI.

This work has an observational basis covering a wide spectral and instrumental range: from the centimeter regime up to millimeter in combination with data from other spectral bands (e.g. optical). In addition Giuseppe works on the theoretical interpretation of the available data, using several statistical instruments and a multi-frequency (and broad-band) approach to the IDV phenomenon
